DESCRIPTION:
Matera, located in the region of Basilicata in southern Italy, is a fascinating and historic city that makes for an excellent day trip.
The history of Matera dates back to the Paleolithic era, and the city is well-known for its ancient cave dwellings, known as "Sassi".
These cave dwellings were inhabited until the 1950s and are now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
On this tour, we will explore the narrow streets and alleys that wind through the Sassi, for a glimpse into the city's unique history.
The city also boasts several historic churches and museums, including the Church of San Pietro Caveoso and the Palazzo Lanfranchi, which houses the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata.
To learn more about Matera's fascinating past, we will stop for a visit to the "Casa Grotta", a typical cave house inhabitated until 1950.
In addition to its historic attractions, Matera also offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The Belvedere overlooking the Murgia Timone will enchant you with its panoramic views of the Sassi and the Gravina River.
At the end of the tour, you will have 1 hour of free time to have lunch on your own or to stroll around the small craft shops.
